Our eye examinations usually last about 40 minutes but we will advise you if you require any extra specific tests and how long these may take.

We have a general routine we perform for every patient but as we like to treat every patient as an individual the optician will tailor the examination similarly, which guarantees you a thorough examination executed smoothly, keeping you as relaxed as possible.

As well as including all tests to check for your sight and to see if any vision correction is required (e.g. spectacles, contact lenses) we also check for any potential eye disease like Glaucoma, Cataract, Macular degeneration to name a few.

Our equipment includes a digital retinal camera and optical coherence topographer which allows us to take photographs and scans of the inside of your eyes so even small abnormalities can be detected, recorded and compared in future checks. Combining this with modern examination techniques we can ensure all is done to help prevent unnecessary deterioration to your sight and eye health. Other tests we will carry out include binocular assessment (how well the eyes work together), peripheral visual field analysis and intraocular pressure measurement.

Your Optometrist will always explain the results of the various assessments and you will be given every opportunity to ask any questions you may have. The recommendations given at the end of the eye examination by your Optometrist will take into account factors such as your working environment, lifestyle and any leisure pursuits you have, so we can meet your visual needs in the best possible way.

Reynolds & Slater have always invested in innovative eyecare and technology. We have recently upgraded our 3D OCT eye scanner, a piece of diagnostic equipment that can detect a number of key eye conditions, such as glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy during a routine eye test.

Our Optometrists recommend an OCT scan for all patients as a baseline. We also advise that patients with a direct or family history of glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetes, vitreous floaters, and moderate short-sight also have a regular scan at each eye examination.

Regular eye examinations are vital to maintaining your vision and overall health.  Reynolds & Slater Optometrists offers the optomap® as an important part of our eye examinations. The optomap produces an image that is unique and provides us with a high-resolution 200° image to check the health of your retina. This is much wider than a traditional 45° image. Many eye problems can develop without you knowing – in fact, you may not even notice any change in your sight.  Fortunately, diseases or damage such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinal tears or detachments, and other health problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure, can be seen with a thorough exam of the retina.

The inclusion of optomap as part of a comprehensive eye exam provides:

  • A scan to show a healthy eye or detect disease.
  • A view of the retina, giving us a more comprehensive view than other methods.
  • The opportunity for you to view and discuss the optomap image of your eye with us at the time of your exam.
  • A permanent record for your file, which allows us to view your images over time and look for changes.

 

The optomap is fast, easy, and comfortable for anyone. The entire image process consists of you looking into the device one eye at a time. The optomap images are shown immediately on a computer screen so we can review it with you.

Free NHS eye tests

Reynolds & Slater are proud to be an NHS accredited practice and offer a full range of NHS funded eyecare services.

You’re entitled to a free NHS sight test if you:

  • are under 16

  • are 16, 17 or 18 and in full-time education

  • are 60 or over

  • are registered as partially sighted or blind

  • have been diagnosed with diabetes or glaucoma

  • are 40 or over and your mother, father, sibling or child has been diagnosed with glaucoma

  • have been advised by an eye doctor (ophthalmologist) that you’re at risk of glaucoma

  • are a prisoner on leave from prison

  • are eligible for an NHS complex lens voucher – your optician can advise you about your entitlement

You’re also entitled if you or your partner – including civil partner – receive, or you’re under the age of 20 and the dependant of someone receiving:

If you’re entitled to or named on:

  • a valid NHS tax credit exemption certificate (if you do not have a certificate, you can show your award notice), you qualify if you get Child Tax Credits, Working Tax Credits with a disability element (or both), and have income for tax credit purposes of £15,276 or less

  • a valid NHS certificate for full help with health costs (HC2)

People named on an NHS certificate for partial help with health costs (HC3) may also get help with the cost of a private sight test.

NHS optical vouchers

You’re entitled to an optical voucher for help towards the cost of your glasses or contact lenses if you:

  • are under 16
  • are 16, 17 or 18 and in full-time education
  • are a prisoner on leave from prison
  • are eligible for an NHS complex lens voucher – your optician can advise you about your entitlement

You’re also entitled if you or your partner – including civil partner – receive, or you’re under the age of 20 and the dependant of someone receiving:

  • Income Support
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
  • Universal Credit and meet the criteria

If you’re entitled to or named on:

  • a valid NHS tax credit exemption certificate (if you do not have a certificate, you can show your award notice), you qualify if you get Child Tax Credits, Working Tax Credits with a disability element (or both), and have income for tax credit purposes of £15,276 or less

NHS complex lens vouchers

To be eligible, your lenses need to be either -10/+10 dioptres or more, or prism-controlled bifocal lenses.

Complex lens vouchers are a contribution towards the cost of these lenses.

The vouchers are only available to those who meet the clinical criteria.
